Rocket.Chat Quick Start Guide

This guide gives you some basic getting started information for a Rocket.Chat application on Spinups.
We will take you through the following steps:
  • Accessing your Rocket.Chat Application
  • Updating your user
  • Creating or inviting new users
  • Setting up new channels
Once these basic things are done, you can get started with chatting with your team members.
This guide assumes that you have signed up for a free Spinups Private Application Cloud account and have a running Rocket.Chat instance created. If you have not create a free account yet, create an account and have Rocket.Chat started for you in a few easy and quick steps.
We will provide the basic steps to get started below. More details on how to use Rocket.Chat is available in the official documentation.
  • Your private Rocket.Chat instance can be accessed in a web browser (recommended) from a link like this:
    https://rocket-chat-.spinups.io. For example https://rocket-chat-demo.spinups.io.
  • To get notifications and to use the audio features of Rocket.Chat, make sure you allow the browser client to do so the first time you try to log on.
  • To get started, log on using your own email and the password you used to signup for your Spinups account.
  • The first user to be created in Rocket:Chat is created as an admin user. This user can invite other users, create users and update various admin settings.
  • Upon initial login,  the user sees the home page. This can be customized to have your own content. One of the many admin settings available.
  • From the drop down menu on the left, select Administration and then Users to see the users in the system. 

New user can be created a number of ways. The following are the most common:

  • Allow users to sign up themselves from the main login page
  • Admin user creates users manually
    Select the + icon in the upper right of the screen, and add the details for each user once the user has been created.
  • Selecting the “paper plane” icon in the upper right, you can invite users by email.
    NB: This requires that email has been set up for your Rocket.Chat instance. For details on how to do this, please see: https://rocket.chat/docs/administrator-guides/email .

  • If you want to change the default name, user name, email and password for your own (or other users), this can also be done from the user maintenance screen.
  • After making changes to your own user details, you will automatically be logged out. Log back in again with the correct username/email and password.
  • After updating your user details and creating or inviting new users, you are ready to get started with chatting.
  • Close the Administration settings and return to the main Rocket.Chat screen.
  • Select the General channel. This is the only channel created from the start – and it is a channel everyone on your team can join and use.

  • Make sure you join the channel by selecting the Join button at the bottom of the screen.
  • To create new channels (admins only), select the + icon in the upper left in the channels section.
  • Create a new channel, e.g. spinups.
  • Once the channel is created, it is ready to use for communicating with your team.
  • Members can be added to a channel by the admin user, by selecting the group membership icon in the right hand toolbar. This is required for private (invite only) channels. If the channel is not private, then any team member is able to join the channel when they wish to do so.
  • If you want to change the look and feel of your Rocket.Chat instance, there are number of options for this. One of them is to change the icons being displayed in the user interface.
Now start chatting, sharing files, images, documents, videos, talking to your team members, video conferences, screen sharing and much more.
